Official 2026 tariffs · London, Manchester, Edinburgh & more
The UK has two main types of licensed taxi: the iconic London black cab (Hackney carriage) and private hire vehicles (minicabs, Uber). Black cabs in London are fully metered and regulated by Transport for London (TfL). The fare starts at £3.80 for the first 233 metres and increases by £0.20 every 117 metres thereafter (Tariff 1, daytime Mon–Fri 06:00–20:00). Evening, weekend, and holiday tariffs are higher. A typical ride from Heathrow Airport to central London costs £50–£85 by black cab. In Manchester, the base fare is £3.00 with a rate of approximately £1.80/km. Edinburgh taxis start at £2.20 with rates around £1.90/km. Always check that the driver uses the meter for licensed Hackney carriages.
