Taxi fares in the United States are set at the city or county level. In New York City, yellow cab fares are metered starting at $3.00 (flag fall) plus $0.70 per 1/5 mile when moving or per 60 seconds in traffic. A flat fare of $70 (plus tolls and surcharges) applies for all trips between Manhattan and JFK Airport. Los Angeles does not have a city-wide metered taxi system — most rides are priced per mile, averaging $2.70–$3.50/mile. Chicago taxis have a base of $3.25 and a rate of $2.25/mile, with O'Hare Airport to downtown running approximately $40–$50. In San Francisco, the flag fall is $3.50 with $0.55 per 1/5 mile. Tip customarily 15–20% in all US cities.
